yknot typeface

yknot is a lowercase display typeface I designed! I was inspired by loops and knots, as can be seen in glyphs, such as k and n. This is the very first typeface I designed but I have been doing a lot of lettering just for fun using a similar font so I knew how some of the glyphs would look like. The challenge was to create the rest of the glyphs that I hadn't written before in a unifying way with the rest of the alphabet.

I created a double-sided tabloid type specimen that can be folded down quarto into a little half letter-sized page booklet and also work as an unfolded poster when unfolded, because... why not!

DEVELOPING THE KEY GLYPHS FOR THE

SECOND CONCEPT FROM IDEATION

INSERTING THE SKETCH INTO A GRID

VECTORIZING THE SKETCH + REFINING

MORE REFINING + FLESHING OUT THE CONCEPT

My initial idea was to make all the glyphs the same width except for a few exceptions (m, w, l, i, e), however keeping j, t, and f  the same width as the rest of the glyphs created an unintended incoherence. The prominent horizontal strokes of these glyphs made them look a lot blockier and wide even when they were the same width as the rest. Decreasing the width for these three letters created a much cohesive look to the overall typeface.

Similarly, the s was a bit problematic in the sense that there wasn't enough negative space in between the strokes, with the three horizontal strokes within the glyph. To address this problem, I made the upper right end of the a lot shorter to minimize clutter and create more breathing room.
